SCREEN REPAIR HURRICANE JACKSONVILLE FL: WHAT HOMEOWNERS SHOULD CHECK BEFORE A HURRICANE

  • 3 min read

In Northeast Florida, hurricane season has a way of turning patio furniture into Olympic javelins and reminding everybody that “I’ll fix that little screen tear later” was, perhaps, a bold strategy.

If you own a pool cage, screened lanai, patio enclosure, or screen room around Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra, Nocatee, St. Augustine, Mandarin, Fleming Island, or the Beaches, your enclosure does a lot more than keep mosquitoes from treating your backyard like a buffet. It protects your outdoor space from debris, bugs, leaves, and everyday Florida nonsense.

But during storm season, small issues can become big issues fast.

START WITH THE OBVIOUS: LOOK FOR TORN OR LOOSE SCREENS

Small tears may not seem like a big deal on a calm Tuesday afternoon. But when wind, rain, branches, and sideways weather show up, a small tear can spread quickly.

WALK AROUND YOUR ENCLOSURE AND LOOK FOR:

  • Torn panels

  • Loose spline

  • Sagging or stretched mesh

  • Panels pulling away from the frame

  • Screen doors that do not close properly

  • Sections that flap, rattle, or look tired from years of sun

Think of this as a wellness check for your backyard. If one panel looks like it has been through three hurricanes and a toddler birthday party, it probably needs attention.

CHECK THE FRAME, FASTENERS, AND DOORS

Screens are only part of the system. Your enclosure depends on the frame, fasteners, doors, and hardware working together.

Look for rusted screws, loose hinges, cracked anchors, bent aluminum, failing door closers, and sections that feel unstable. In coastal and humid areas like Ponte Vedra Beach, Atlantic Beach, Jacksonville Beach, and Amelia Island, corrosion can sneak up on homeowners.

A screen enclosure should feel solid. If it shakes, leans, sags, or makes noises that sound like it is auditioning for a haunted house, it is time to call a professional.

TRIM BACK TREES BEFORE THEY TRIM YOUR SCREEN FOR YOU

Tree limbs and loose branches are one of the biggest threats to screen enclosures during storms. A healthy oak tree is beautiful. A dead branch flying through your pool cage at 45 mph is less charming.

Before storm season ramps up, trim branches away from the enclosure, clear dead limbs, remove loose yard debris, and keep heavy landscaping from pressing against screens or frame sections.

This is especially important in neighborhoods with mature trees, like Mandarin, Fruit Cove, Fleming Island, and older Jacksonville communities where the shade is great until the weather starts acting up.

BRING IN THE LOOSE STUFF

Patio chairs, umbrellas, potted plants, pool toys, grills, side tables, garden décor, and outdoor rugs should be stored or secured before major weather.

The rule is simple: if you would not want it thrown through your screen, do not leave it sitting around during stormy weather.

Yes, this includes the decorative ceramic frog your aunt gave you. We are sure he is lovely. He also has projectile potential.

AFTER THE STORM, DON'T GUESS

After heavy weather, inspect your enclosure from a safe distance first. Look for torn panels, bent framing, loose doors, fallen branches, and anything that appears unstable.

Do not climb onto the enclosure. Do not pull damaged sections. Do not try to “just pop it back in” if the frame looks compromised. Damaged aluminum structures can be dangerous, and the wrong repair attempt can make the problem worse.

Take photos for your records, then schedule a professional inspection.

Call Screen Enclosures by Joe Power if you notice screen tears, storm damage, loose panels, sagging mesh, damaged doors, rusted hardware, frame concerns, or a pool cage that just does not look right after a storm.

Our team has served Northeast Florida homeowners since 2000, and we understand how Jacksonville weather treats outdoor spaces. Sometimes you need a single panel repaired. Sometimes a full rescreen makes more sense. Sometimes the enclosure needs deeper repair. We will help you understand the right option without the runaround.
